DeSiRe-NG: DEpendable and Secure Infrastructure for Resilient Next Generation Networks
The new 5G radio standard has the potential to be used in industrial applications. Compared to its predecessor, it achieves a multiple of the data rate and enables a secure and private radio network. Because of these properties, 5G is now being considered in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT's). However, unlike the private cellular network, additional and more stringent requirements apply to the industrial network. In addition to real-time requirements, reliability and availability for the data transmission must be ensured.
Especially in terms of reliability and availability, restraints still prevail at users. In the research project DeSIRe-NG, the reliability and resilience of 5G networks are therefore investigated and evaluated. In this context, disturbances and interferences in 5G campus networks are reproduced and recorded, in order to further process it with a dedicated toolbox based on open source software. Appropriate performance metrics are used for the evaluation and recorded in a standardized form by using a digital twin. The SmartFactoryOWL is used as an industry-oriented environment to generate relevant and reusable results. In addition, Lufthansa Industry Solutions will verify the practical relevance of the results that are obtained from a real use case. The use case focuses on high-resolution video streams for remote maintenance of turbines and requires a reliable connection to the radio network.
DeSiRe-NG is realized by the TU Ilmenau, the inIT of the TH OWL, the transfer and innovation network InnoZent OWL e.V., NUROMEDIA GmbH and Lufthansa Industry Solutions GmbH. The cooperation of the research institutes and the companies ensures scientifically valuable, practical and industrial-relevant results.
