WDR chief editor Christine Etrich talked to Professor Volker Lohweg, expert in the field of banknote and document security, about the latest research project in the field of optical document security: “Sound-of-Intaglio”. Lohweg explained how consumers can distinguish counterfeit money from genuine ones.

In the project “Sound-of-Intaglio“, a scanner is used that can detect the steel engraving (Intaglio) of genuine banknotes. A program on a tablet tells the user if intaglio can be seen on a banknote or not.

In the future the camera-based reading systems could be used at supermarket checkouts for example. The interest being shown by banks and industry is significant.
