Parkinson's Network OWL+ met for the fourth time at CIIT

On 26 June 2024, experts and interested parties gathered for the fourth time in the auditorium of the Centrum Industrial IT (CIIT) in Lemgo for the network meeting of the Parkinson's Network OstwestfalenLippe+ (PNOWL+). Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Christoph Redecker from the University Hospital OWL, the focus of the event was on further training and an intensive exchange on current developments in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Inga Liepelt-Scarfone

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation by Prof. Dr. Inga Liepelt-Scarfone from Tübingen University Hospital, who dealt with modern diagnosis and treatment methods for cognitive disorders in Parkinson's disease. Her in-depth knowledge and the data presented provided profound insights and stimulated lively discussions among those present.

This was followed by a more in-depth exchange on specific topics in smaller working groups.

Innovation through technology: the latest results of a specialised Parkinson's app

Christoph-Alexander Holst, research associate at the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL), then presented the progress made by his working group, which is working on the development of a special app for the care of Parkinson's patients. He emphasised the potential of language models to improve communication and support for people with Parkinson's disease: "By using language models, we can significantly reduce the communication barriers between doctors, therapists and patients. Language models open up completely new possibilities for efficient and patient-centred care."

This then led to an extensive discussion among the participants, who addressed the question of the extent to which language models may provide effective support in app-based patient care.

Conclusion with an interdisciplinary case conference

The network meeting ended with an interdisciplinary case conference in which a specific case was discussed in detail. This discussion promoted the exchange of information and helped the participants to discuss new approaches in the care of Parkinson's patients.
