New possibilities for the digital product passport: inIT becomes a member of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance

The Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) has recently become a member of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance. The close cooperation in the project “DiPP - Digital Product Passport for Secure Information Exchange in the Supply Chain” has led to this membership.

Open Industry 4.0 Alliance: A network for digital innovation

The Open Industry 4.0 Alliance brings together numerous companies with the aim of creating an open ecosystem for digital transformation in industry. The Alliance promotes the integration of new technologies in practice and their demand-oriented further development in order to overcome the challenges of Industry 4.0.

Successful collaboration in the DiPP project leads to sponsoring membership

The DiPP project of the “Interconnected Automation Systems” working group headed by Prof. Dr. Henning Trsek showed major overlaps with current initiatives being worked on within the OI4. In an ongoing series of hackathons, a concept for a digital product passport based on the administration shell is being developed and implemented as a prototype. In this context, the researchers at inIT were also able to gain important insights and contribute their own research focuses. “Thanks to the broad range of participants in the hackathons, the project can be better aligned with the specific challenges of industry,” reports Philip Sehr, a member of the DiPP project team. The successful collaboration has now resulted in a sponsored membership of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance.

Expanded focus and new synergies

The new membership provides the foundation for uncovering further synergies and expanding cooperation. In addition to the digital product passport, this includes topics from the field of IT security, for example. Furthermore, a joint concept is to be developed in order to integrate current topics from industry and important key technologies such as the administration shell into teaching. In this way, students can be prepared for the challenges of their industrial career at an early stage.

Prof. Dr. Henning Trsek emphasizes: “The extensive partner network and the activities within the Alliance offer us the opportunity to tap into new synergies and integrate current problems from industry into our research work.”

The sponsored membership in the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance opens up a promising path for the inIT to play a key role in shaping the digital transformation in industry and to develop innovative solutions for the challenges of the future together with strong partners.
