What is the AICommunityOWL?
The AICommunityOWL is an open and independent network of AI/ML enthusiasts, founded in 2020 by employees of TH OWL, Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and Phoenix Contact and supported by the Centrum Industrial IT.
What is the community's aim?
The AICommunityOWL stimulates digital transformation in several domains. Among other things, by organizing open hackathons in which real challenges from different companies have to be solved with AI/ML methods. So far, these have been problems from the smart city, smart building or manufacturing sectors. The main goals include making the potential of AI/ML tangible for companies, on the one hand, and offering researchers and AI/ML enthusiasts the opportunity to work with real data and try out their own ideas, processes and algorithms, on the other. It is also a classic match-making of problems and potential solutions.
Who can join the community?
Everyone! Both locally and abroad. The events are usually held in English and are also attended by many international participants.
What part does the inIT play for the community?
The institute is a "source" of many young and motivated people. The digital transformation we are striving for is supported with their ideas and developed processes. We have many experts who contribute their expertise in the field of AI/ML and applied research. In addition, we can rely on a great many contacts that have been expanded and cultivated for many years, especially at inIT.
Why is the topic of AI so important and not just a trending topic?
AI can be used in a wide number of areas and even in places where it was not even expected to be possible. This is, for example, not only the detection of very complex problems such as the detection of leaks in a large pneumatic system, but also a prediction and preventive action of such events. This saves time and money, and potential production downtime can be avoided.
The next AIChallengeDays are coming up soon. What is behind this event?
AIChallengeDays is a three-day online hackathon that deals with a real problem from a company. The next one will take place from September 10 to 12 and it will again be an exciting event with a real challenge. It's about optimizing recycling processes by efficiently identifying different types of metal scrap, which will then serve as an ecologically and economically efficient form of raw material supply. It is of course also a very nice opportunity to get in touch with other experts and to network. Also for startups this is a fantastic opportunity to maybe even win their first customers!
