Membership of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance picks up speed: inIT strengthens collaboration on future topics

The Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) recently became a member of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance (OI4) and actively participates in important events and working groups. This included the annual All Members Convention, which took place in mid-September on the SAP Campus in St. Leon-Rot near Heidelberg.

Exchange on current industry trends

The All Members Convention of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance offers members the opportunity to exchange views on current trends in digital transformation and to find out the latest news from the various working groups. Natalia Moriz, research group leader of the "Interconnected Automation Systems" working group headed by Prof. Dr. Henning Trsek, took part in the event together with her colleagues Philip Sehr and Robin Foster in order to further intensify collaboration with other members. "Events such as the All Members Convention offer a very good opportunity to gain new impetus and integrate this into our research work," says Natalia Moriz.

Integrating the digital future into teaching

In addition to research, however, teaching is also an aspect of the collaboration between inIT and OI4. A concept is currently being developed for integrating current industry trends, such as the digital twin, into teaching. "Familiarising young specialists with current topics during their training will strengthen their skills and make it easier for them to start their careers," emphasises Natalia Moriz. The aim is to give students a practical introduction to the topics that can be directly related to challenges in industry.

Development of the digital product passport

Another focus is work on the digital product passport. inIT is conducting research here as part of several projects, and the topic is also being addressed within OI4. In a series of hackathons, most recently at Murrelektronik in Oppenweiler at the beginning of October, use cases are worked out and practical solutions developed. "The event format offers us the opportunity to reflect on our research priorities in the context of real industrial challenges," explains Philip Sehr, who has already taken part in these events several times.

Membership of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance gives inIT the opportunity to utilise synergies and develop innovative solutions for the digital transformation of industry together with partners.
