Annual Colloquium KommA in Lemgo: 70 Experts Discuss about the Future of Industrial Communication

(Lemgo, 07.12.2016) It was about latest developments, trends and challenges of Industrial Communication: The 7th annual colloquium “Communication in Automation (KommA)” took place at SmartFactoryOWL on 30. November. About 70 experts from industry and science attended the conference that was organized by the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) of OWL University. At the end of the conference it was agreed that Industrial Communication will develop into an Industrial Ethernet.

The organizers of the conference Professor Jürgen Jasperneite (Director inIT) and Professor Ulrich Jumar (Director ifak) welcomed 70 conference participants in Lemgo.

Already for the 7th time inIT and the Institute for Automation and Communication (ifak) in Magdeburg organized the annual colloquium “Communication in Automation – KommA”, that alternatingly takes place in Lemgo and Magdeburg. KommA is a platform for industry and science in the German-speaking Area. Experts from the field of Industrial Communication do have the opportunity to exchange views and ideas about latest technical and scientific approaches and questions.

Industrial Communication has its roots in Germany and is for more than 20 years the backbone of decentral automation systems. Professor Jürgen Jasperneite (Director inIT and Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and Conference Leader) emphasizes: “Intelligent Networking plays an important role in the context of Industry 4.0”. The importance of reliable and safe communication systems will be significantly increased. In the future there will be a large number of nodes with many different LAN- and WAN-technologies”, so Jasperneite.

Professor Hans D. Schotten (TU Kaiserslautern and DFKI e. V.) hold the keynote speech of this year’s colloquium with the topic: “5G meets Industrial Communication”. He emphasized that 5G is not just a single technology, but also a bunch of technologies and concepts that follows the IMT-Advanced standard. For industry especially the concept of network slicing is – besides maching-type communication – interesting for a prioritization of critical data streams. Network resources can be reserved for different applications, depending on their demands.

In 22 speeches experts presented latest developments and research findings from the broad spectrum of radio-based communication technologies, the configuration of Ethernet, the use of OPC-UA, IT-safety aspects and the usage of TSN in the future. “On the way to an Industrial Internet research issues concerning the management of heterogeneous networks shift into the center of interest”, resumes Jasperneite.

The next KommA takes place on 14. and 15. November in Magdeburg.
