As part of the Information Days of the TH OWL, the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Berufskolleg Detmold accepted the invitation of Jasmin Zilz, inIT office, to an exciting tour of the SmartFactoryOWL for the IT trainees specializing in system integration and data and process analysis as well as for the upper school of the FOS Informatik. As both inIT trainees will successfully complete their training this year and are subsequently planning to study at the TH OWL, the event offered a valuable opportunity to gain practical insights into the choice of course and possible everyday working life, as Jasmin Zilz summed up.

Welcome to the SmartFactoryOWL

Benedikt Lücke, trainer at inIT, warmly welcomed the guests to the SmartFactoryOWL and gave an overview of the joint facility of Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and TH OWL. The aim of this joint facility is to research and present current research activities and their practical applications with cooperation partners.

Tour through the SmartFactoryOWL: Diverse technological applications

The participants had the opportunity to visit various stations. Dennis Heitkamp from Fraunhofer IOSB-INA presented distributed production using the example of 3D printing. The system uses geodata and capacity utilization to decide for itself whether production should take place in Lemgo or Karlsruhe. Patrick Spanier from the SmartFactoryOWL office presented intelligent manual workstations that both promote the inclusion of people with disabilities and support SMEs in optimizing their processes. The presentation then moved on to CUNA RealProduction, which deals with new production methods and the monitoring of life cycles for the production of sustainable reusable cups. Sergej Grunau, research associate at inIT in the area of start-up support, then explained the various 3D printing processes.

From theory to practice: inIT trainees present demonstrator

The inIT trainees Tim Esau and Jannik Peters then took over the tour and used the teaching demonstrator to show how modular automation works. Benedikt Lücke then delved deeper into the topics of real-time networks and 5G technologies at the site. "IT specialists will no longer only be needed in offices in the future: With new technologies, new challenges in the field of networking and IT monitoring will also arise in industry, which will be implemented by IT specialists," said Benedikt Lücke. Patrick Spanier ended the tour with the high rack of the laboratory for power electronics and electrical drive technology.

Positive feedback and future plans

The teachers were impressed by the innovative approaches and the practical nature of the event. They expressed their desire to come back to the Innovation Campus to develop cooperative teaching modules for vocational school lessons. The university information days thus provided an important impetus for a possible career at TH OWL and an understanding of future technologies.

Insights into study programs and practical research

inIT also actively participated in the regular program of the university information days in the morning. Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann presented the Data Science study programme. As part of the presentation of the Medical and Health Technology degree program, Frauke Wiegräbe, research assistant at inIT, and Patrick Gaudl, student associate, showed the Parkinson's app developed at inIT and thus made it clear how closely the degree program is linked to practical research at the institute. Prof. Dr. Lukasz Wisniewski left the stage to his student Arved Sachau, who gave the audience a direct insight into the practical side of his Digital Management Solutions degree course. Arved'sexperiences illustrated the practical approach and the immediate applicability of what he had learned, which was particularly inspiring for the prospective students present.

A successful day came to an end with heartfelt thanks to all those involved.
