Excursion to Berlin: Innovative learning formats for the digital future

The topic of digitalisation and learning is becoming increasingly important. Innovative event formats are intended to maximise the learning effects and make studying at the Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) even more future-oriented. These important topics were the focus of the recent study trip of the ‘Digital Management Solutions’ (DiMS) degree programme to Berlin.

First stop on the excursion: Futurium in Berlin.

Prof. Dr. Lukasz Wisniewski, board member of the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) at TH OWL and head of the DiMS course, emphasises the importance of such excursions: ‘We need to take a holistic view of learning, digitalisation and studying and develop new formats. This enables us to optimally prepare our students for the challenges of the digital transformation."

Insights into the future

Students from both years of the DiMS degree programme used the bridge day after Ascension Day for an informative excursion to Berlin. Their first stop was the Futurium: a centre that presents the potential of new technologies in an ethical and political context. Here, important questions about environmental conditions and resource utilisation in connection with technological developments were addressed.

The Futurium not only offered students critical insights, but also plenty of space to try out and discover. Whether robot development, traffic control or the use of artificial intelligence in medicine - complex issues were conveyed in an understandable way using everyday examples.

Visit to the Bundestag

After their visit to the Futurium, the students continued on to the Bundestag, where they listened to an informative presentation in the plenary chamber. They were given an insight into the workload of members of the Bundestag and the large number of bills that have to be dealt with in a legislative period.

The day ended with a cosy get-together in a beer garden on the banks of the River Spree. On the journey back to Herford, the participants discussed their many impressions and the interdependencies between technology, society and equal opportunities.

New learning formats and close collaboration

According to Prof Dr Lukasz Wisniewski, continuous collaboration and active exchange between lecturers and students is crucial in order to continuously improve the educational offerings at TH OWL and adapt them to the requirements of digital transformation.

In addition to innovative teaching formats, the Digital Management Solutions (DiMS) degree programme addresses a combination of three main areas: new technologies, agile management and business administration. This is done in close cooperation with regional companies, where students have the opportunity to face real-world problems and gain a wide range of practical experience during their studies.
