The challenge: Soft sensor for stable process control

The challenge of the hackathon was to develop a soft sensor for stable process control. A weekend full of innovation and practical relevance brought together experts, students and industry representatives to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in an exciting use case.

During the hackathon, which was organized by Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, the participants used real data from industrial processes to develop their own AI algorithms and present innovative solutions. Among others, the participants were expertly supervised by Prof. Markus Lange-Hegermann, member of the board at inIT.

The challenge, presented by SOLLICH KG, the global market leader in the development of efficient production systems for the chocolate industry, focused on designing a soft sensor that takes over the function of hardware and at the same time enables stable process control. The question examined the relevance of all sensors and measuring points in industrial machines, particularly in the detection of temperatures in temperature control processes.

All ten teams presented great results at the end of the hackathon, reflecting their dedication and creativity. The winning team, consisting of Bjarne Seen, Philipp Olfert, Henrik Folz and Joshua Henjes, was awarded first place and prize money of 1,000 euros for their innovative solution.

SmartFactoryOWL - the perfect environment for the hackathon

SmartFactoryOWL, a living lab for Industry 4.0 with 2,000 square meters of space for production and innovation, provided the ideal environment for this hackathon. The cooperative atmosphere, professional organization and support from various co-organizers contributed significantly to the success of the hackathon. This successful collaboration has created a cooperative community that looks forward to continuing to organize events for the advancement of artificial intelligence in industrial applications.
