The inIT at the it's OWL Transfer Day 2023

On September 26, 2023, it's OWL invited guests to this year's Transfer Day at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Arts. A total of 16 transfer projects were presented in four parallel sessions. The team of Institute Industrial (inIT) reported on the DeepConcrete project, conducted in collaboration with BREMER AG. BREMER is a company specializing in turnkey construction using precast reinforced concrete elements. These precast elements are manufactured by BREMER itself and stored temporarily in an external warehouse until needed. Currently, warehouse allocation is based on the "where there is available space" principle. To enhance warehouse operations' efficiency and sustainability, BREMER AG initiated the DeepConcrete joint project.

The DeepConcrete Project

In the DeepConcrete project, inIT is working with BREMER to develop an automated warehouse management system. This system employs various innovative methods of industrial image processing, coupled with computer intelligence. These technologies were developed by the Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, and Information Fusion group led by Prof. Dr. Volker Lohweg and Christoph-Alexander Holst. The aim is to evaluate the images captured by cameras mounted on the gantry crane and integrate them into the existing digital warehouse system. The ultimate goal is to establish a fully automated storage system that uses positional information to ensure swift and efficient access to the stored precast reinforced concrete components.

More about the it's OWL Transfer Day

The it's OWL Transfer Day 2023 not only emphasized technology transfer but was also dedicated to sustainability in the context of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Following introductory presentations by Wolfgang Marquardt (OstWestfalenLippe GmbH), Prof. Dr. Roman Dumitrescu (Fraunhofer IEM) and Prof. Dr. Harald Gröger (Bielefeld University) as well as tours of the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC, Bielefeld University), corporate and research partners had the opportunity to obtain detailed information about the variety of transfer projects.
