In the it's OWL technology project AutoS2, the requirements for automating the risk evaluation are determined and a possible semantics for the management shell is defined and implemented. The third component is the implementation of an assessment algorithm that performs the risk assessment automatically. The Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) is one of the project partners and is working together with Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, TÜV SÜD and Phoenix Contact on the digitalization of machine risk assessment.
The aim is to create the basis for an automatic evaluation system of safety and security properties for adaptive production and intelligent technical systems. For this purpose, the information required for an automated safety assessment will be determined, standardized and pronounced in a machine-readable manner. The collected characteristics for Safety & Security are to be evaluated automatically by evaluation algorithms (AI). Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are to benefit from this in particular. This is because they are often unable to afford their own specialists with the necessary specialized safety and security knowledge. Automation of this knowledge is therefore particularly helpful here.
As early as February 2020, the decision was made to fund the it's OWL innovation project AutoS² - Automatic Safety and Security Assessment System for Intelligent Machines. Despite the Covid 19 pandemic, it was now possible to fulfill all formalities in order to receive the funding decision from the state Ministry of Economics, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy (MWIDE).
The special circumstances also required a virtual project start. Those responsible for the project took a whole day to agree together online on the specific issues and content of the project. The project is a building block of the joint vision "Machine Safety 2030".
Goals
AutoS² pursues goals that are seen by the project partners as a necessary basis for enabling the successive implementation of the Machine Safety 2030 vision in further projects:
Definition of a catalog of characteristics for describing safety
Semantics for a uniform understanding and formalization of safety characteristics
Transfer of expert knowledge/test questions into an evaluation algorithm
Comprehensible data basis, data authenticity
Creation of a reference implementation
Statements
Prof. Trsek, Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT): "The automated evaluation of security and safety is an essential key to the implementation of adaptable, flexible production plants."
Dr. Benk, PHOENIX CONTACT Electronics: "Continuously ensuring safety and security for reconfigurable machines and systems is extremely time-consuming manually. AutoS² pursues a simple autonomous plug & play strategy for this, which we want to actively promote and help shape for our industry."
Dimitri Harder, TÜV SÜD Product Service: "To date, there are no semantics for Safety & Security and we need to create a reference implementation as a basis for discussion in the various standardization bodies."
Philip Kleen, project manager from Fraunhofer IOSB-INA: "I am pleased to be able to drive this important topic forward with very experienced project partners."
